Midwestern Cities

It feels like money is so ostentatiously displayed in these cities. Cranbrook, Case Western, Toledo's art museums, to name a few examples. And then, right across the street, boarded up buildings and weed-strewn parking lots. These little concentrations of wealth feel so out of place, so wrong in a way. New York, for all its money and power, never feels this stratified - or maybe the distance between them is just longer there.
This doesn't seem to be a new phenomenon either - there are some stunning beautiful old buildings in these cities (the Rockefeller Building in Cleveland absolutely floored me). There is something to this, I'm not sure what yet, but maybe Milwaukee will have the answers.
