if you're ever driving through idaho late at night on the interstate, you may not see another driver for about 40 minutes. it is absolutely strange.
but, if you get a chance, stop in the town of Mullan. It felt like the representative slice of small-town america. there are about 900 people in the town, a bar, a school and a little gas station.
it isn't pretty, but it was amazing to see there are actually towns like this still left.

ah...you just revealed your big city naivete on that one. There are so many small towns like that one in this country it blows my mind. That number is probably the interesting statistic behind the new shift in urbanized vs. non. You should try some of the skinny black lines on the map instead of just driving on the double-red ones!
